The comedian Chris Lilley, known for iconic characters such as Ja'mie, has announced his return after signing a deal for a new 10-part Netflix series.

The Australian star has developed a cult fandom with his collection of spoof documentaries, which follow the lives of characters including privileged schoolgirl Ja'mie, teacher Mr G and troubled schoolboy Jonah Takalua.

The new show, Lunatics, hits Netflix on April 19.

It follows the story of six new characters including Becky, a 7'3″ tall Uni student, Quentin, a ponytailed real estate agent who aspires to be a DJ, as well as Joyce, a former adult film star now living in suburbia and Jana, a pet psychic to the stars.

The comedian has faced previous criticism for some of his characters.

NZ Herald reported that Maori Television pulled Lilley's Jonah from Tonga series because of backlash in 2017.

An email document shared between Maori TV's board members and obtained by RNZ revealed the board was not aware the programme would be broadcast on the channel.

The document said the board members "regret not being made aware in time to prevent the first programme from going to air".

It also said Maori would "feel insulted if non-Maori painted their face and proceeded to belittle our people," RNZ reported.

"We unequivocally apologise to our Tongan whanau," said the document, which also stated Maori TV would never air the show again.
