Richard Hunt Obituary-Death News; Renowned American Sculptor Who Transformed Public Spaces, Richard Hunt Passes Away
Richard Hunt, a renowned artist from Chicago who was the first Black sculptor to have a solo retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and whose public works received accolades from presidents, passed away at the age of 88.
According to a statement that was published on Hunt’s website, the deceased “passed away peacefully” on Saturday at his residence. The cause of death was not established.
During the course of his career, Hunt was responsible for the creation of over 160 pieces of public art that were commissioned and are currently on display across the country, including in libraries and on college campuses.
His “Flight Forms” made of stainless steel and measuring 35 feet in height can be found at Midway International Airport in Chicago.
The city’s Bronzeville area was the location where his monument, which featured bronze columns, was dedicated in 2021. The monument was erected in honor of the late civil rights leader Ida B. Wells.
“Richard’s legacy will live on for generations to come,” said Superintendent Brandon Johnson of the Chicago Police Department in a statement released on Saturday evening.
He has been a lifelong resident of Chicago, and his extraordinary career that has spanned seven decades has left an indelible mark on both our city and the world.”
More than one hundred of Hunt’s works are currently on display at museums all over the world. The “Swing Low” bronze monument, which weighs 1,500 pounds and is located at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, District of Columbia, is included in this regard.
On the first floor, the sculpture, which serves as an homage to the spiritual and bears the same name, is hanged from the ceiling overhead.
